Soy wax is a great sustainable alternative to use in your candles, and the perfect option if you're looking to leave a smaller carbon footprint and be more conscious of your health.
At RÊVE, we're proud to use 100% soy wax in our candles. There are a lot of different wax options when it comes to candle making, which can make it overwhelming and confusing when you're on the market for a new candle. You may have heard of common waxes, such as paraffin wax, beeswax, and coconut wax to name a few. So, why should you choose soy wax for your candles over others?
What is wax and how different is it to oil?
In broad terms, wax is a fatty, flammable solid that liquifies when heated. The key difference between oils and waxes is that at room temperature, oils liquify while waxes harden into a solid.
What is soy wax?
As you might have figured from its name, soy wax is made from soybeans. It's created by separating or extracting soybean oil from the beans, which is then treated with a solution of hydrogen that increases the oil's melting point. The melting point is brought to between 49C and 82C, which achieves a wax that is solid at room temperature.
How is soy wax a sustainable option?
Being a vegetable-based wax, soy wax is a renewable resource. This means that they can be grown constantly without depleting the planet's resources! Plus, as it's derived from soybeans, soy wax is naturally biodegradable and vegan, meaning that its disposal is Mother Nature approved. Unlike paraffin wax, which can take up to 500 years to naturally degrade, soy wax can be composted and only takes 4-6 weeks to biodegrade.
Extra brownie points: Soy wax is a naturally biodegradable, compostable, and renewable resource.
Myth or Fact - Soy wax candles produce a slower burn
Fact! Soy candles can burn from 35% to 50% longer than paraffin candles due to their lower melting point. With a cooler burning temperature, soy wax candles burn well and form even pools of wax, even in colder environments. This allows a slower burn with a much stronger aroma compared to other waxes. Another upside to this is that you'll get more use out of your candle, making soy candles the more cost-effective choice in the long run!
At RÊVE, we aim to create memories and experiences through our unique scents without compromising on the environment and your health. This is why we choose to use only 100% soy wax in our candles. If you need any candle-related assistance, we're always here to help!
